Raga Kirwani (Live at Zaver Mansion)

by Joel Veena

/

about

Raga Kirwani is an evening raga of unknown origin in North Indian music. Some say that it was borrowed from South Indian, Carnatic music, where it exists with the same scale. Others that it came from the folk music of Afghanistan and surrounds. Guruji says that it is an 'orphan raga.' Because of its unknown heritage, a performer has a lot of freedom when expressing this raga. There is a potential for it to meander, lost and listless without the strict guidelines of ascending and descending patterns. There is also the potential for it to make its own way, unique in each presentation, through the hearts of the musician and listeners, tapping into deep emotions and spiritual reverie.

This rendition was performed on January 28, 2018 at Zaver Mansion to an intimate audience. Solo on Indian slide guitar by Joel Veena.
