about

February 12, India Habitat Centre - Milap: Jugalbandi of Indian slide guitar and bansuri performed by Joel Veena & Amit Singhal, accompanied on tabla by Gaurav Mahto.

This is a recording I made of our concert at India Habitat Centre. The placement of the handheld recorder was not the best, my apologies, but this is still a memorable performance. The first concert I produced in Delhi was well attended. It was free, but all of the advance passes were reserved before the day of and I was receiving calls, asking if there was going to be space.

Of course the original Milap album was with my longtime friend tabla maestro Suraj Nirwan but he was away in Dhaka, Bangladesh teaching music as part of his ICCR position. Gaurav Mahto ably stood in. I've known Gaurav for almost as long as Suraj as he was a young student of Suraj's father, Pt. Subhash Nirwan, the first musician I met in Delhi. He's always behind the scenes at Suraj or Puraskar's concerts, making things happen; a helpful and genuine guy with a great hold on the instrument.

We performed Raag Yaman with alaap, jhaptaal and teental followed by Kirwani and our "hit", Jai Love. The audience was very appreciative and included a handful of classical musicians who all congratulated us. Afterwards we all went out to eat at Karim's.
